HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 2, 2018) - The FDU-Florham field hockey used three second half tallies to top the Stevens Institute of Technology 3-1 Sunday afternoon.
The victory moved the Devils to 2-0 on the season, while Stevens leveled out at 1-1.
FDU notched the opening three shots on goal, but Ducks goalkeeper Emily Franco kept the Devils off the board. On a counter-attack, the hosts grabbed a 1-0 edge, as Ireland Tawney scored off a pass from Regan Littell.
The Ducks seemed poised to add to their lead, but a penalty stroke in the 20th minute was saved by senior
Samantha Rubin. Rubin made two saves with under two minutes left in half to keep the deficit at one heading into the halftime break. Despite trailing, FDU held an 11-7 edge in shots during the half.
FDU finally broke through in the 38th minute, converting a corner attempt. Senior
Alyssa Mele inserted the ball to classmate
Chrissy Penney. Penney rifled a shot that was deflected perfectly by senior
Kelly O'Neill, tying the game at one all. The Devils looked to grab their first lead of the day in the 41st minute, but
Makayla Pak had her corner attempt stopped by a Ducks defender.
With just under 20 minutes remaining, Littell was issued a green card and was forced off the field. The Devils needed just six seconds with the man-advantage. Off the restart, junior
Maggie Sohns fired a shot that freshman
Haleigh Flukey deflected into the back of the cage. For Flukey, it was her first career collegiate goal.
Stevens looked for the equalizer and peppered Rubin with shots, but the goalie was able to fend off the attempts, making a series of stops. Flukey added the insurance goal with 10:29 left in the game, converting a shot from in front of the cage. The Devils did not allow a shot on goal after the second goal from Flukey.
Senior
Brooke Sherwin led the team with four shots, while Flukey converted both of her attempts. Rubin made five in net for the victory, her second of the season.
The Devils close out their three game road trip with a contest again No. 4 Franklin & Marshall Wednesday evening.
