LANCASTER, Pa. (September 5, 2018) - The FDU-Florham field hockey team was narrowly edged by No. 4 Franklin & Marshall 1-0 Wednesday evening.
The Devils fall to 2-1 with the setback, while F&M stayed perfect at 3-0.
Franklin & Marshall controlled play for the majority of the first half, but Devils had a chance to break the 0-0 edge in the 11th. Junior
Maggie Sohns rifled a shot that just wide. The Diplomats had a pair of chances in the 15th minute, but senior
Samantha Rubin made two big saves.
The Diplomats finally broke through for what ended up being the game-winning tally in the 19th minute. Off a corner, Emma Durantine found Melissa Gula, who deposited the ball into the bottom left of the cage. Rubin would make one additional save in the half to keep the score 1-0 in favor of the hosts.
Franklin and Marshall held a 9-1 edge in shots, while picking up six corners to the Devils one.
F&M seemed poised to add a second goal in the 44th minute, but junior
Marie Pietracatella made the defensive save to keep the Devils down one. FDU had one final chance in the 55th minute, but Sohns had a shot saved from keeper Ilianna Santangelo.
Rubin had five saves in the setback, while Sohns had a pair of shots.
FDU will open its home slate on Saturday, as they welcome Gwynedd Mercy for an 11 a.m. contest at Robert T. Shields Field.
