MADISON, N.J. (September 2, 2018) - The FDU-Florham men's soccer team lost their home opener 4-1, to Ferrum College Sunday afternoon.
Despite having an early opportunity to score, the Devils were unable to score on two shots. The visiting Panthers got on the board when freshman Jonah Woyansky moved around the goalkeeper and scored in the 10th minute.
In the 28
th minute, the Devils nearly tied the score when Sophomore
Justin Estremera found a streaking sophomore
Dimitris Stoupas in front of the net, but to no avail as Panther goalie Marco Rivera stepped up in his box to make the save.
The Devils had a goal negated as time expired in the first half due to an offside but the Devils continued to apply pressure in the second half. Estremera was able to get his defender out of position and ripped a shot from 20 yards out that sailed high.
In the 57
th minute, Estremera received a pass from sophomore
Brandon McGregor and shot across the goalkeepers face and beat him low corner to tie the match. Seven minutes later, Stoupas just missed netting his first goal of the season when his shot went wide right.
Ferrum reclaimed the lead in the 67
th minute when Michael Lyons capitalized on a free kick just outside of the goalkeeper's box. The Devil's best chance of tying the score again came in the 84
th minute when Estremera used a back-heel pass to find Sophomore
Ricky La Stella for a point blank shot that was saved. Ferrum tacked on two more goals in the final four minutes.
Junior
Liam Ryan had eight saves in goal for the Devils. Ferrum outshot FDU-Florham 25-14.
The Devils will be down the road next against Drew University Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 7 p. m.
