Field Hockey Doubles Up Union, 6-3

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (September 16, 2018) - The FDU-Florham field hockey team picked up its fourth straight victory with a 6-3 victory over Union College Sunday afternoon.

The Devils are now 6-1 on the season, and have outscored opponents 20-6 during the four game run. The Dutchwomen suffered their first setback of the season and are now 3-1.

The opening half featured chances for both teams, but the game remained scoreless until the final three minutes. Senior Kelly O'Neill put the Devils in front in the 33rd minute, as she shot from in close to beat the goalkeeper. The lead was short-lived however, as Union answered off a corner 1:06 later.

The Devils upped the pressure in the second half, holding a 19-3 edge and an a 10-2 edge in corner attempts. In the 41st minute, senior Chrissy Penney poked the ball past the goalie off a scramble following a corner try. Nine minutes later, classmate Brooke Sherwin shot from the top of the arc and scored for her third goal of the season.

FDU scored twice within a 1:36 span, starting with a nifty individual effort from junior Maggie Sohns. Sohns stickhandled into the arc and shot from just inside to make the score 4-1. The junior had a hand in the fifth goal, as her pass to senior Makayla Pak set up sophomore Marissa Colvin for a one-timer for the sophomores first tally of the season.

The Dutchwomen tallied two goals to close the gap to 5-3, but Sohns set up Sherwin for a blast off a corner to close out the scoring with 52 seconds remaining in the game.

Sherwin fired a team-high seven shots, as O'Neill had five. Senior Samantha Rubin and sophomore Megan March each made one save in the victory.

FDU will be on the road Wednesday, taking on Drew at 4:30 p.m.
