WILKES BARRE, Pa. (September 12, 2018) – Senior
Lauren Harris of the FDU-Florham volleyball team tied the school-record for kills in a five-set match as the Devils came from behind to take down King's 3-2.
The Devils move to 3-7, and 1-0 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom, while King's suffered their first loss of the season. The Monarchs dropped to 6-1, and 0-1 in the MAC Freedom. The set scores were 22-25, 23-25, 25-17, 25-20, 15-13.
Harris tallied 25 kills, tying the mark set by Helena Riede on two occasions during the 2013 season. The senior also eclipsed Riede's record for attacks in a five-set match, swinging 80 times.
FDU opened a 5-3 edge thanks to back-to-back aces from junior
Nathalia Padron, but the host Monarchs rebounded with six straight points. King's gained a 20-15 lead, but three straight unforced errors coupled with a kill from Harris cut the score to 20-19. The Devils would get no closer, as King's notched five of the final eight markers to grab a 1-0 lead.
The Devils grabbed a 4-1 lead early in the second frame but were unable to firmly pull ahead. Neither side was able to go in front by more than three points for most of the period, and a Harris kill pushed the Devils up by a 20-18 margin. A double-block by
Marissa Lehnert and
Kacie Ros stretched the lead to 23-21, but King's recorded the final five points to take a 2-0 edge in set.
With the third stanza tied at three, FDU tallied the next three points, with the run finished with a big double-block from Lehnert and senior
Katie Quinlan. Quinlan hammered down back-to-back kills after a sideout, and the lead swelled to 17-8 on an unforced attack error. King's got back within six, but Padron pounded down a kill and a ball-handling error cut the set lead in half at 2-1.
It was the hosts who were able to take the lead early in set four, using a 7-3 rally. With the score level at nine, FDU notched four straight points, as Ros served up an ace to close out the run. The Devils stayed on top for the rest of set, and Lehnert evened the match at two with a big kill.
King's pulled ahead in the fifth with five of the first eight points, but Padron kick-started a 7-1 spurt to jump in front. The Monarchs did not go away, using a 7-1 rally of their own to take a 12-11 lead forcing FDU into a timeout. The timeout worked, as a service error leveled the score at 12. A double-block by Lehnert and freshman
Gabriella Lopez brought up match point, and a Harris kill completed the comeback.
Harris also notched 25 digs on the defensive end, while Lehnert smashed home 11 kills to go along with four blocks. Padron posted a match-high 29 digs with 10 kills, joining Ros and sophomore
Jessica Garreffa with double-digit kills.
FDU heads to Montclair State University Saturday for a tri-match, taking on the Red Hawks as well as Lycoming beginning at 1 p.m.
