MONTCLAIR, N.J. (September 15, 2018) - The FDU-Florham volleyball was tripped up by Lycoming and Montclair State Saturday afternoon.
With the two setbacks, FDU fell to 3-8 on the season.
LYCOMING 3, FDU-FLORHAM 1 (23-25 25-18, 25-19, 25-9)
The Devils reeled off the first six points of the opening set, forcing Lycoming into a timeout. The lead grew to 12-4 after a pair of unforced attack errors, but the Warriors did not give up, trimming the deficit to 22-18. Junior
Nathalia Padron slammed home a kill to bring up set point, but Lycoming recorded the next three. Senior
Lauren Harris put down a set from freshman
Kesha Patel to put the Devils up 1-0.
A solo block by senior
Katie Quinlan made the score 11-9 in set two, and Padron served up an ace to bring the score to within one at 14-13. Lycoming went on a 8-1 run to pull in front 23-15. Quinlan had a kill while Patel notched an ace to prolong the set, but a kill by Lyco evened things at one all.
FDU fell behind 5-0 before using a 7-1 spurt to pull in front, led by a pair of aces from sophomore
Rebecca Morse. FDU took the lead back at 15-14 thanks to a double-block from senior
Marissa Lehnert and sophomore
Christina Massa, but the Warriors tallied seven of the final nine points to pull in front 2-1 in sets. Lycoming never trailed in the final frame, scoring 17 of the opening 22 points.
Harris led the team with 10 kills and 19 digs, as Morse chipped in 18 digs and two aces. Lehnert and Quinlan each had three rejections in the setback.
MONTCLAIR ST. 3, FDU-FLORHAM 0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-20)
Sophomore
Liz Moise recorded a kill to break a 4-4 deadlock, causing MSU to take a timeout. The timeout paid off, as the Red Hawks pulled in front 11-7. After a Moise kill made the score 19-15, Montclair ended the set with six of the last eight points to take the lead.
A 9-2 rally by the Red Hawks in set two was the difference, but the Devils made it close as back-to-back kills from Padron cut the deficit to four. That was as close as FDU would get, as Montclair ended the set on a 7-1 spurt. Back-to-back attack errors by MSU cut the set three lead to 14-13 but the hosts would pull back up three at 19-16. Harris notched a kill and a ball-handling error made it a one point game, but FDU would get no closer.
Patel handed out 16 assists to go along with seven digs, while Harris led the way with nine kills and 11 digs. Padron and Morse each had 12 digs on the defensive end.
FDU resumes conference play Tuesday, hosting Wilkes at 7 p.m.
