MADISON, N.J. (August 31, 2018) – The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham field hockey team notched a come from behind 3-1 win over William Paterson Friday evening.
The game served as the season-opener for both teams, with the Devils notching their fifth straight victory over the Pioneers.
The host Pioneers wasted little time, potting the opening goal just 1:35 into the contest. The staunch Devils defending buckled down after the goal, not allowing William Paterson to get a shot during the rest of the half.
With just under five minutes left in the stanza, junior
Maggie Sohns fired a shot that was saved by the Paterson keeper. Senior
Cassidy Santorelli pounced the rebound to even the score at one. That would be the halftime margin, but the Devils held a 10-1 edge in shots during the opening 35 minutes.
Sohns put the Devils on top 2:21 into the second half, using a strong individual effort to beat the goalie. After a shot by senior
Brooke Sherwin was stopped in the 42
nd minute, William Paterson called a timeout to try and find the equalizer.
The Devils controlled the tempo for the majority of the period, adding an insurance goal in the 51
st minute. Senior

Makayla Pak, who rifled a shot for first tally of the campaign. The Pioneers had a pair of penalty corners midway through the frame, but the Devils defense did not allow a shot on goal.
Senior
Samantha Rubin played 58:51 to earn the victory, while sophomore
Megan March relieved for the final 11:09. Sohns and Sherwin combined for 11 shots, while Pak added three.
FDU will return to action on Sunday, taking on Stevens at 11 a.m.
