WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (May 2, 2018) - The FDU men's tennis team was eliminated in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom semifinals in a 5-3 setback against King's.
The Devils drop to 15-5, while King's improves to 14-6. The Monarchs will face No. 1 Wilkes for the crown on Saturday afternoon.
FDU's No. 1 doubles tandem of senior
Max Moscowitz and sophomore
Kevin Weller were topped 8-3, while senior
Chris Ly and sophomore
Chris Fiorenza evened the match at No. 2 doubles. The Chris' cruised to an 8-1 triumph.
No. 3 doubles was a battle, as senior
Steven Serras and freshman
Tyler Schacher faced off against Terry Briggs and Cameron Tuck. The Devils duo gained a 6-4 edge, but the Monarchs reeled off the final four games, grabbing a 2-1 lead entering singles action.
Weller dropped was knocked off at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-0, but Fiorenza earned his second victory of the day at No. 6 singles. The sophomore eased to a 6-2, 6-0 win helping FDU get within one. Ly pulled the two sides even at three with a key 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles, with three matches still in play.
FDU was unable to complete the comeback, as Serras and Schacher each fell in contested matches. Serras was tripped up 6-4, 6-4, while Schacher fell 7-5, 6-3. At the time the match was clinched, Moscowitz had lost the first set 7-5. He was midway through the second and was ahead 5-2 before King's claimed victory.
The Devils wait to hear about a potential berth in the ECAC Tournament.
