MADISON, N.J. -- Fairleigh Dickinson University men's lacrosse sophomore goalie
Adam Reifer broke the program's single-season saves record as the Devils topped Wilkes University, 11-7, in their conference opener Saturday afternoon at Robert T. Shields Field.
The Devils improve to 3-5 and 1-0 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom as the Colonels drop to 5-4 and 0-1 in the MAC Freedom.
Reifer finished with a record-breaking 24 saves in the contest and picked up three ground balls as junior attacker
Will Charbonneau fired in four goals to the lead the Devils in the triumph.
FDU jumped out with the momentum, scoring four unanswered goals out of the gate early in the first quarter.Â
Sophomore midfielder
Pat Stewart sniped in the first point just over under two minutes into the contest.
The Devils then scored three goals within a span of just 1:10 as junior
Kyle Conrad and sophomores
John Guido and
John Belanger each notched a goal to grab a 4-0 lead.
The Colonels clawed their way back in the second and third quarters, closing the gap, 6-5 in the third quarter.
However, Wilkes' comeback was halted by Charbonneau who scored three-straight goals for the Devils to keep his team ahead.
Senior
David Stewart added a goal of his own and Belanger scored twice more to put the Devils up 10-7 with 8:15 remaining in the contest.
With 2:35 remaining in the game, sophomore midfielder
Cole Biedrzycki made a great defensive play to cause a Wilkes turnover. Senior
Dan Sagl picked up the ground ball and Charbonneau had the final say with his fourth tally off a
Pat Stewart feed to seal the deal.Â
On the defensive end, sophomore
Mike Gartner played a key role, causing four turnovers and grabbing two ground balls and senior
JT Bretschneider caused two turnovers and picked up three ground balls.
Belanger also picked up five ground balls and caused three turnovers in addition to his three goals in the contest while Guido,
Pat Stewart and freshman attacker
