MADISON, N.J. (April 22, 2018) - The FDU men's tennis team earned an 7-2 win over Rutgers-Newark before falling to Staten Island 5-4 Sunday afternoon.
The Devils are now 13-3 on the season. The unique day FDU play Rutgers-Newark at home, before crossing the river to take on Staten Island.
"I thought we played exceptionally well just coming off of a doubleheader," said head coach
Tom Battaglia. "CSI has a very talented squad. They have six guys that could really play anywhere on their lineup. It was great competition to gear up for the MAC Championship."
MATCH 1: FDU-Florham 7, Rutgers-Newark 2
FDU swept through doubles action, with the lone challenge coming at No. 3 doubles. After the No. 1 team of
Kevin Weller and
Max Moscowitz won 8-2, the No. 2 team of
Chris Ly and
Chris Fiorenza breezed to an 8-1 triumph. Freshman
Tyler Schacher and sophomore
Brendon Urbano held on for a tough 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles.
Moscowitz dropped a three-set decision at No. 1 singles, but the rest of the singles lineup came through with wins. Fiorenza and Schacher were especially dominant at the bottom of the lineup, winning 6-0, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-4 respectively.
Ly won his first set 7-5 before winning the second 6-1. After winning the 50 win mark yesterday, Weller kept up his winning ways, earning a 6-1, 6-0 win.
MATCH 2: Staten Island 5, FDU-Florham 4
The Devils found themselves trailing 2-1 after doubles action. Moscowitz and Weller paired up at No. 1 for an 8-6 victory. The teams Fiorenza and Ly along with Serras and Urbano each suffered setbacks.
Moscowitz was a double-winner in the match, coming back from trailing one set to none. The senior fell 6-3 before rebounding with a 6-0, 10-5 win. Ly also picked up a three-set win, winning the first frame 6-4. After dropping the second, the senior rebounded with a 10-7 victory. Fiorenza was also a winner at No. 6 singles, picking up a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 win.
FDU is back in action on Tuesday, taking on both Lehman College and St. Joseph's-Brooklyn. The St. Joseph's-Brooklyn match will take place at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
