WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University men's lacrosse team fell to King's College, 8-7, in an overtime heartbreaker on Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.
The Devils drop to 3-7 on the season and 1-2 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom as the Monarchs even out to 5-5 and 2-1 in the MAC Freedom.
FDU went down early as King's came out with three-straight goals to the end the first quarter.
The Devils owned the second quarter though, answering back with four-straight goals, including two from senior
David Stewart and one each from junior
Will Charbonneau and sophomore
John Guido.
The Monarchs found a way to notch another tally with 59 seconds left in the first half to leave things at 4-4 heading into the second stanza.
King's scored first in the third quarter but freshman
John Belanger capped off four-straight FDU shots with a tally of his own to tie things at 5 each.
With under five minutes remaining in the contest and the Monarchs leading 7-6, sophomore
Pat Stewart fired in the equalizer off a feed from
David Stewart on a man-up opportunity to force overtime.
The comeback wasn't meant to be, however, as King's Brian Steiger found the back of the net with 1:47 remaining in the four-minute overtime period to end the game.
On the defensive side, sophomore
Mike Gartner caused three turnovers and picked up two groundballs as goalie
Adam Reifer made 12 saves in the defeat.
Up next, FDU returns home to face DeSales University on Wednesday, April 18 at 7 p.m. at Robert T. Shields Field.
