MADISON, N.J. (November 18, 2018) - The FDU-Florham women's basketball team won their game against Rutgers-Newark 74-59, Sunday afternoon in the FDU Tip Off Classic.
FDU-Florham improves to 3-1 as Rutgers-Newark falls to 2-1 on the season.
The Devils started the first four minutes of the game on a 6-2 run in which they forced the Scarlet Raiders into making two turnovers and shooting only 1-for-5 from the field. Rutgers-Newark responded with a 7-0 run of their own which ended in the final minute of the quarter, when senior
Raven Dowling hit two free throws and was able to feed senior
Kayla Croswell for an easy jumper before time expired.
FDU-Florham extended their 16-13 lead when junior
Breion Knox hit a layup 45 seconds into the second quarter. Both teams continued to trade buckets until junior
Jennah Roman hit a three to extend the Devils lead to seven at 27-20 with 5:33 remaining in the period. The Scarlet Raiders responded with a short 3-0 run of their own that was ended by a corner three from Roman. Moments later, Croswell hit a tough layup off the feed from Dowling to give the Devil's their largest lead of the first half at nine with the score 32-23.

Aleah Bass ended any momentum Rutgers-Newark was gaining. FDU-Florham carried the 34-27 lead heading into half in part to their 80% shooting in the second period, which including going 2-for-3 from deep in the quarter.
The Devils started on a 16-2 run in the second half which was ignited back back-to-back corner treys by Roman. The run lasted just under five minutes in the third quarter. FDU-Florham held the Scarlet Raiders to 1-13 shooting during the run which extended the Devils lead to 21 at 50-29. Rutgers-Newark would not roll over as they responded with a 12-3 run over the next three and a half minutes to make it a 53-41 game.
In the fourth quarter the Devils defense forced three Scarlet Raider turnovers over the first three minutes of action. However, Rutgers-Newark would cut the Devils lead to 11 at 61-50 after making a layup off a FDU-Florham turnover. Both teams went back and forth scoring but with the score 67-56 Roman hit a floater in the lane to give her a new career high 14 points on the evening. This would spark a 7-3 Devil run which lasted until the final whistle.
Croswell finished with a career high 15 rebounds and tied the career high in points she set yesterday at 21. The double-double was her second of her career. Dowling finished with a season high 10 assists, while adding six steals, as junior
Cayla Staggers finished with 16 points, five rebounds, and four assists. As a team the Devils recorded a season high 20 assists in the contest.
The Devils will travel to Hoboken, N.J. to face Stevens Institute of Technology on Tuesday November 20, at 6 p.m.
