Field Hockey Knocked Off by No. 4 TCNJ

MADISON, N.J. (October 9, 2018) - The FDU-Florham field hockey team was topped by No. 4 The College of New Jersey 4-2 Tuesday evening.

The Devils are 11-3, while The College of New Jersey moves to 10-1 overall.

Junior Maggie Sohns and senior Chrissy Penney netted goals for the Devils. Senior Samantha Rubin had six saves in net, as junior Marie Pietracatella and freshman Sydney Moskal each tallied defensive saves.

The Devils had a chance to strike first in the ninth minute when senior Cassidy Santorelli snuck behind the defense and had had an opportunity to score but was denied. The teams continued to battle back and forth in the first half until a Devils defensive miscue led to a penalty stroke for TCNJ. Senior Jackie Schwartz capitalized off of the stroke to give TCNJ the 1-0 lead with just under 11 minutes remaining in the half.

The Lions doubled their lead moments later when they found the back of the cage for the second time in six minutes. The Devils trailed the Lions 6-3 in the shot department, as the Lions also notched the lone corner of the frame.

The Devils wasted no time cutting the Lions lead in half, when Sohns got passed the defense and rifled a close range shot to the keeper but it was saved. However , Sohns gathered the rebound and quickly shot again. This time the ball found the back of the cage with 32:44 remaining in regulation.

The offense continued to apply pressure on the Lion defense which led to the Devils first penalty corner of the evening. The penalty corner led to a quick shot by senior Makayla Pak which was blocked, but Penney was able to gather the rebound and score the game tying goal. The goal was Penney's sixth of the season.

The Lions reclaimed the lead in the 49th minute when a shot deflected off a FDU defender and snuck past Rubin. The Devils had two opportunities to tie game late but were unable to do so. The first came with a penalty corner with seven minutes remaining but the Devils were unable to get a shot off.

Moments later with 6:51 remaining a TCNJ player was yellow carded which gave FDU a one player advantage for five minutes. The Devils were only able to get one shot during the advantage and shortly after TCNJ returned to full strength, they scored the fourth goal of the night.

The Devils will host Misericordia University, Saturday, October 13 at 12 p. m. for a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom contest.
