Field Hockey Takes Down Misericordia, 1-0

MADISON, N.J. (October 13, 2018) - The FDU-Florham field hockey team defeated Misericordia University 1-0 in double overtime, Saturday afternoon at Robert T. Shields Field.

The Devils improve to 12-3, 4-0 in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom, while Misericordia falls to 2-11, 1-3 in the MAC Freedom.

Senior Brooke Sherwin netted the overtime winner. The goal was her seventh on the season and her second game-winning goal this season. Fellow senior Makayla Pak notched her four assist of the season on the Sherwin goal.

Both teams played tough defense in the first half. The Devils only allowed two shots and Misericordia allowed five. Senior Brooke Sherwin's shot in the 20th minute was the only shot of the half that was on-goal but the Cougars' keeper made the save.

The defensive battle continued in the second half. However, the Devils had 12-2 second half shot advantage but was unable to find the back of the cage. One of the Devils best opportunities to score came in the 53rd and 54th minute when on two separate penalty corners the Devils forced the Cougar keeper to make saves in which she dropped into a split. The Devils held a man advantage after a Cougar yellow card at the 62nd minute of regulation. During the advantage the Devils rifled off five shots but were unable to net the first goal of the game.

The Devils had an opportunity to walk it off in the first overtime when Sherwin beat the keeper but an impressive defensive save by Misericordia's Kortney McEwen kept the Cougars in the game.
FDU-Florham started the second overtime down two players after receiving late green and yellow cards.

The Devils defense kept the Cougars without a shot during the Misericordia advantage. In the 84th minute, Sherwin received a pass from Pak and cashed in on the one-timer attempt to secure the victory for the Devils.

The Devils will host to Delaware Valley University, Wednesday, October 17 at 7 p. m. for their next conference game match-up.
