Pietracatella's Overtime Winner Sends Field Hockey Past Wilkes 1-0

EDWARDSVILLE, PA. (October 5, 2018) - Junior Jessica Pietracatella scored the lone goal 1:43 into overtime to lead the FDU-Florham field hockey team past Wilkes 1-0 Friday evening.

The Devils, who received votes in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division III National Coaches Poll this week, improved to 11-2 overall and 3-0 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom. Wilkes dropped to 6-6 on the season, 2-1 in the MAC Freedom.

Wilkes goalkeeper Dallas Kendra was tested early, fending off shots from Maggie Sohns and Kelly O'Neill during the first 10 minutes. The Colonels were awarded consecutive penalty corners in the 19th minute, but the Devils defense locked down did not allow a shot.

FDU held a 5-2 lead in shots at halftime, while also out-cornering Wilkes 5-3. The defensive unit was particularly strong, not allowing a shot on goal.

Sohns had back-to-back tries in the 49th minute, but Kendra was able to stave off both shot attempts. Senior Samantha Rubin faced her first shot in the 55th minute, as the Colonels picked up a little bit of momentum. Over the final 15:28, the hosts peppered the Devils with six shots on goal, but Rubin turned them all away,

Pietracatella nearly gave them Devils the lead in the 68th minute, but Kendra made a pair of saves in close to preserve the deadlock. With no time remaining, FDU was awarded a penalty corner, but were unable to convert sending the game to overtime.

The Devils controlled the overtime from the beginning, gaining a penalty corner 49 seconds in. After Wilkes cleared the zone, the Devils attack pushed forward, with Pietracatella ripping a shot past Kendra for her second tally of the season.

Sohns led the way with five shots, while Pietracatella and O'Neill each notched three. In goal, Rubin made six key saves.

FDU returns home on Tuesday, when they host No. 4 The College of New Jersey at 7 p.m.
