Volleyball Sweeps Past Manattanville

PURCHASE, N.Y. (October 10, 2018) – The FDU-Florham volleyball team picked up a three-set sweep over Manhattanville 25-20, 25-19, 25-23 in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom action Wednesday night.

The Devils improve to 8-17, 3-2 in the MAC Freedom, as Manhattanville drops to 7-8, 1-4 in conference. FDU returns to action Saturday, taking on Penn State-Berks and St. Elizabeth beginning at 1 p.m.

FDU took advantage of Valiant miscues in the opening, racing out to a 7-1 lead. Consecutive kills from senior Lauren Harris pushed the lead up 11-6, but the hosts closed the gap down to three. Junior Nathalia Padron pinned down a set from Kacie Ros forcing M-Ville into a timeout as the Valiants would not any closer than four. Despite fending off four straight set points, senior Marissa Lehnert pounded home a Ros set to put the Devils up 1-0.

The Devils pulled in front 7-4 to open set two, but Manhattanville regained the lead courtesy of a 4-0 spurt. The hosts grabbed their biggest lead of the set at 13-9, but four straight FDU tallies leveled the score back up. The Devils took advantage with a 6-2 run, causing a timeout. The Valiants forced a side-out, but FDU notched three straight points, capped off with two straight kills from Harris.

An attack error set three put FDU up 6-3, but Manhattanville pulled back in front 12-11 thanks to a solo block. The set remained close before the Devils seemingly took advantage for good, using a 6-1 rally to go up 19-15. The Valiants kept pushing back, tallying six straight points before Harris slammed a kill to end the run. A 4-1 run by the Devils brought up match point, but a kill prolonged the set. A Manhattanville service error on the next point handed the Devils the sweep.

Four players had 10 more digs, led by 16 from Harris. The senior also recorded 15 kills against three errors, as Lehnert posted her first career double-double of 11 kills and 10 digs. Sophomore Liz Moise was a force at the net, matching a season-high with four blocks.
