PURCHASE, N.Y. (January 24, 2018) - The FDU women's basketball team fell to Manhattanville 64-49 Wednesday evening.
The Devils fall to 12-6 overall and 5-2 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom, while Manhattanville moved to 14-2, 5-1 in conference.
FDU began the game with 10 of the first 15 points, holding the Valiants to just two field goals over the opening 8:10. The hosts evened the game and pulled in front thanks to a 9-3 run. A layup with 5:41 left in the second quarter gave Manhattanville a three point lead which was the biggest of the half, but FDU would go on an 11-0 run, taking an eight point edge.
Junior
Mariah Martinez and sophomores Gabby Harris and
Kendrea Williams each had three points during the rally, while sophomore
Taiah Thornton hit a layup with 1:27 remaining in the second to put the Devils up seven. The Valiants converted a jumper with two seconds left which sliced the Devils lead to five into the break, and kick-started their comeback hopes.
The hosts bridged the third and fourth quarters with a 25-6 spurt, forcing six Devils turnovers during the 11:42 spell which saw the lead grow to double digits. FDU closed to within 11 thanks a quartet of free throws from Williams, but that would be as close as the Devils could get.
Williams had 17 points while Harris tallied 16. Playing her first game in over a year, Thornton recorded eight points and three steals off the bench. Senior
Michaela Piserchia recorded a team-best seven rebounds in the setback.
The Devils return to the Ferguson Recreation Center Saturday, taking on Misericordia at 1 p.m.
