MADISON, N.J. (January 17, 2018) - The FDU men's basketball team was tripped up by Eastern 80-76 in overtime Wednesday evening.
FDU went out to a 14-10 lead, as junior
Eric Ray capped off an 8-0 run with a jumper. The Devils led for a majority of opening half, but the Eagles went on a 21-6 spurt over rhe final 9:41 of the first half to claim a 36-32 lead heading into the halftime break. The Devils shot 44.1% in the first period, and only turned the ball over three times in the half.
The Devils opened the second with five straight tallies, finished off with a twisting layup by freshman
Ahmad St. Fleur. The hosts extended their lead to double-digits on a jumper by junior
Darren Davy with 8:40 left in the second half. Eastern did not go away, taking seven points, all from Austin James to cut the deficit down to a single point.
After the Devils countered with six straight of their own, the Eagles scored eight of the next nine points, including the tying trey from Darius Washington. That run coincided with the teams 16-3 run bridging the second half and overtime, grabbing a 76-70 lead. Freshman
Shawn Smith capped off a 6-0 run to tie the game at 76, but Eastern tallied the final four points to escape with an 80-76 win.
Davy shot 12-of-17 from the field, good for 26 points and nine rebounds while Ray had 15 points and six boards. Smith chipped in 10 points, seven steals and five rebounds in the setback,
The Devils will be back in action Saturday, heading to Doylestown, Pa. for a showdown against Delaware Valley at 3 p.m.
