MADISON, N.J. (September 3, 2017) - Freshman
Ricky La Stella scored on a penalty kick, but NYU topped the FDU men's soccer team 3-1 Sunday.
The Devils fell to 0-2, while NYU moved to 1-0-1.
Neither side was able to do much in the first half, combining for four shots and only one on goal. FDU opened the scoring in the 49th minute, as La Stella converted a penalty kick after a Violet foul in the box. The Devils held the lead for 15 more minutes, but NYU found the equalizer as Maxi Rodriguez one-touched a cross from Matteo Schlitz in the 64th minute.
Just six minutes later, Tristan Medios-Simon moved in all alone and gave NYU a lead they didn't give up, converting the breakaway. 1:13 later, NYU drew a foul in the box and earned a penalty kick. Medios-Simon stepped and had his first attempt stopped by senior
JT Bretschneider. But the official ruled Bretschneider came off his line, and Medios-Simon came back and converted this time for 3-1 finale.
FDU had a chance to cut the gap in half, but a header by
Dimitris Stoupas was stopped by the NYU goalie. Freshman
Justin Barbosa had three shots, while Bretschneider made three saves in the setback.
