Field Hockey Wins OT Thriller Over Stevens

MADISON, N.J. (September 3, 2017) - Junior Makayla Pak buried her own rebound 6:18 into the first overtime period to help the FDU field hockey team to a 3-2 win over Stevens Sunday.

The Devils, who moved to 2-0 and the Ducks who are 0-1, are no stranger to the extra session games. Last season, the teams were all even through 70 minutes of regulation and 30 minutes of overtime before Stevens won in the 1-vs-1 shootout. Today, the contest featured 10 cards and five penalty strokes.

Stevens only managed one shot over the 20:43, but defender Drew Lustig had her stick on the line at the 13:45 mark to record a defensive save to keep the score even at zero. Two minutes later, the senior connection of Marissa Kowalskie and Gabby Allen linked up to tally the games first goal. Allen poked the ball to Kowalskie, who ripped a shot from right in front giving the hosts the lead.

On the Ducks second shot of the half, senior Victoria Alvarez evened things at one with 14:16 left in the frame. Stevens had a golden opportunity to take a lead, but junior goalie Samantha Rubin stopped a Cassidy O'Hearn penalty stroke with 4:25 left in the period.

The Stevens goalie copied Rubin in the 43rd minute, stopping junior Brooke Sherwin's attempt at a penalty stroke. A critical foul inside the penalty area led to another visitors stroke in the 53rd minute, but Rubin again was up for the test, this time blocking the attempt by Hannah Silvestri. One minute later, Alvarez redirected a cross into the cage for her second of the game, putting Stevens up 2-1.

With exactly 13 minutes remaining, Stevens committed a foul and were whistled for another penalty stroke opportunity. This time, sophomore Marie Pietracatella went high side and evened the score. FDU had another chance to take lead in the 64th minute, as a Chrissy Penney shot glanced off the post. Neither side could break through, and overtime would decide the winner.

O'Hearn had a chance to win the game 2:51 into the extra session, but this attempt went high over the cage. The Devils had a penalty corner at the 76:07 mark, and the first Pak shot was stopped, but she nabbed the rebound and found the back of the cage for her first goal of the year.

Kowalskie had a game-high nine shots, while Sherwin was right behind her with seven. Rubin only had to make two saves, but both were the penalty stroke attempts.
