Women's Volleyball Notches First MAC Freedom Win

MADISON, N.J. (September 19, 2017) - The FDU women's volleyball team earned its first Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom win with a 25-17, 25-18, 25-16 sweep of King's Tuesday.

The Devils improve to 7-3 on the season, while King's dropped to 9-4.

FDU fell behind 4-0 early in the first, but quickly regrouped and went ahead for good on a kill by Katie Quinlan. The Monarchs closed to within 18-14, but a big-time double-block by Quinlan and senior Courtney Conte helped propel the Devils forward. Senior Melissa Gaffney ended the set with a kill from Conte.

The Devils went up 12-9 on a Gaffney kill in the second set, which kick-started a 5-0 spurt for the hosts. After King's closed to within three, Marissa Lehnert served up eight straight including an ace to stretch the gap. King's fought off two set points before a Lauren Harris kill put the hosts up 2-0.

King's was able to keep the third stanza close before Conte dumped a set over for a kill to put FDU up 15-11. Gaffney tallied six straight from the service line, with Harris, Lehnert and Nathalia Padron all slamming home kills during the set-changing rally. Quinlan pounded home a kill to end the match in straight sets to help move FDU to 1-1 in the MAC Freedom.

Gaffney led the way with 13 kills, while Harris had eight kills and 14 digs. Senior Rachel Catena had 11 digs, while Conte dished out 38 assists,
