Gaffney Picks Up 1,000th Career Kill as Volleyball Sweeps

MAHWAH, N.J. (September 16, 2017) - Senior Melissa Gaffney recorded her 1,000th career kill as the volleyball swept SUNY-Potsdam and Mount St. Mary Saturday.

The Devils move to 6-3 overall with the two wins.

FDU-Florham 3, SUNY-Potsdam 0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-14)
Needing 13 kills entering the first match, Gaffney hit exactly that total over the three sets. Fittingly, the senior ended the match with a kill as the Devils won in straight sets. In the opening set, Potsdam got within five, but three unforced errors handed the set to FDU.

Junior Lauren Harris served up five straight points which proved to be the difference in the second set. Potsdam battled back with six straight markers, getting within 20-16. FDU would score five straight markers to end the second stanza. FDU scored eight of the final nine points in the third set, with Katie Quinlan and Gaffney recording two kills each.

FDU hit .233, as Gaffney led the way with 13 kills. She also chipped in 14 digs, with Rachel Catena adding 23 digs to lead the match.

FDU-Florham 3, Mount St. Mary Knights 0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-14)
FDU stormed out to an early 8-1 lead in the opening stanza, before Mount St. Mary chipped away with six of the next seven. The Devils tallied the final three markers, capped off with a kill from Quinlan.

The first six points belonged to FDU as Courtney Conte served consistently. The Knights got within six at 16-10, but FDU scored nine of the final 14 to build a 2-0 edge. As with the previous two sets, FDU never trailed, leading by as much as 11. A Knight attack error ended the match as FDU did not drop a set on the day.

Harris pounded home 11 kills, while Conte handed out 26 assists in the victory.

FDU is home on Tuesday, welcoming King's for a 7 p.m. start.
