Volleyball Splits on Day One of Ramapo Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MAHWAH, N.J. (September 15, 2017) - The FDU volleyball topped St. Joseph's-Long Island in straight sets before falling to host Ramapo College in during the first day of the Ramapo Invitational.

With the split, the Devils are now 4-3 on the season.

FDU-Florham 3, St. Joseph's-Long Island 0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-18)
The Devils never trailed in the opening frame, using five straight Marissa Lehnert points to go up 7-2. The Golden Eagles got within six seven on a solo block, but FDU rolled off the final four markers, capped off with a pair of unforced attack errors.

St. Joseph's battled to take a 7-2 lead in the second but the Devils stormed back with senior Rachel Catena at the service line. Catena served up six straight, including a pair of aces to put FDU ahead for good at 16-11. Back-to-back unforced Devil errors brought a set to 17-15, but a timeout righted the ship and would tally eight of the final 12 points.

With the third stanza deadlocked at nine, senior Amelia Vetto served up two aces to pull in front. Despite giving a consecutive aces, the Devils didn't let the score get closer than four, and an attack error by the Golden Eagles ended the match.

Vetto led the way with three aces, while Catena, Melissa Gaffney and Lauren Harris all had double digit digs. Harris had 12 kills and 15 digs, while Gaffney had 10 kills and 16 digs.

Ramapo 3, FDU-Florham 1 (25-21, 11-25, 25-15, 25-22)
After surrendering 16 kills in the opening set loss, the Devils battled back and held the host Roadrunners to five in the second and a mere -.027 hitting percentage. Harris led a key second set rally, and Catena added two service aces to even the match at one.

Ramapo battled back and limited FDU to a .000 hitting percentage while hitting a match-high .297 with 15 kills. The difference in the fourth set was Ramapo put down 18 kills to the Devils 14, and held a 54-38 edge in that category during the four sets.

Catena had 24 digs and five aces, while Lehnert had five rejections and seven kills.
