Field Hockey Edges Out Ramapo, 3-2

MAHWAH, N.J. -- The FDU-Florham field hockey team held off Ramapo College in the final minutes of play to edge out a 3-2 victory on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference contest.

The victory pushed the Devils to 4-1 on the season as the Roadrunners dropped to 2-3.

FDU-Florham's veteran defense of seniors Lauren Brannan, Gabby Allen, junior Makayla Pak and sophomore Marie Pietracatella held off five consecutive penalty corners within a span of just over two minutes to keep things even.

The Devils responded to the Roadrunners' offensive push with a goal from junior Brooke Sherwin off a feed from senior Marissa Kowalskie following a penalty corner opportunity.

With momentum on their side, FDU-Florham pounded shots on Ramapo's cage until senior forward Kelly O'Neill broke through on an assist from sophomore Maggie Sohns to make it 2-0 at half time.

The Devils' offense continued to press at the start of the second half, dominating the field with shots.

It was sophomore Ariana Wexler who fired in her first collegiate goal on an Allen assist in the 53rd minute to ensure the Devils' victory.

With 2:49 remaining in the contest, the Roadrunners used a penalty corner to spark their offense as Lauren Berry scored a goal off a Claudia Wetzel assist to put Ramapo on the board.

Just about a minute later, Gianna Mouskourie notched an unassisted tally to close the scoring gap but FDU-Florham used a timeout to regroup and and were able to hold off the Roadrunners to earn the win.

The Devils outshot Ramapo, 24-5 throughout the contest and sophomore Samantha Rubin made two saves.

FDU-Florham returns home to Robert T. Shields Field to take on Union College on Friday, Sept. 15 at 6 p.m.
