MADISON, N.J. – Junior
Brooke Sherwin scored twice and senior
Gabby Allen added a goal to lead the FDU-Florham field hockey team over William Paterson, 3-0, in their season opener at Robert T. Shields Field.
The Devils appeared in mid-season form with a dominant breakout performance, outshooting the Pioneers, 18-8.
FDU-Florham took advantage of their first penalty corner opportunity as Allen sent the ball in to junior
Makayla Pak. Pak fed the ball up the middle and junior
Chrissy Penney redirected it to Allen at the top of the cage who fired in the first goal of the game just 3:46 into the contest.
Both squads went scoreless for the remainder of the first half as Pak made a defensive save with two minutes remaining to keep the Devils up, 1-0.
It took the Devils just two minutes into the second to score an insurance goal as Sherwin grabbed a breakaway and slammed the ball into the bottom left pocket of the cage.
About 10 minutes later Sherwin drilled in another insurance goal off a feed from senior
Marissa Kowalskie to put things at 3-0.
The Devils found themselves in trouble when William Paterson received a slew of penalty corners in the last 20 minutes but FDU-Florham's defense led by Pak, seniors
Lauren Brannan and
Paige Zawislak, junior
Stephanie Noll and sophomore
Marie Pietracatella held off an aggressive attack.
In the midfield sophomore
Maggie Sohns put up a great showing, consistently halting William Paterson and pushing the Devils up on offense.
In goal, junior
Samantha Rubin made two saves to earn the victory.
Up next, the Devils take on Stevens Institute of Technology on Sunday, Sept. 3 at noon at Robert T. Shields Field.
