Strong First Half Propels Men's Lacrosse Past King's 12-8

MADISON, N.J. (April 9, 2017) – The FDU-Florham men's lacrosse team scored seven unanswered goals in the first half on route to an exciting 12-8 conference victory over King's College at Robert T. Shields Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Devils improved to 5-6 on the season and 1-1 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom as King's fell to 4-6 and 1-1 in the MAC Freedom.

FDU-Florham took advantage of man-up opportunities, notching four goals with the advantage. The Devils outshot the Monarchs, 44-37, and recorded 20 successful clears out of 22 attempts to King's 17 of 22.

Freshman John Belanger led the attack with three goals as classmates Alec Orazietti, John Guido and senior Matt Melnik nabbed two each.

Monarchs' Shawn Dickey struck first with a goal in the third minute of play, however, freshman John Guido answered back minutes later with a man-up tally.

Melnik followed in suit to put the Devils ahead with just under six minutes remaining in the first half and Belanger and Orazietti added one each before time ran out.

FDU-Florham wasted no time in the second quarter as Belanger fired in a goal off a feed from junior David Stewart only 23 seconds into play.

The Devils worked to grab an 8-2 lead early in the third quarter but King's rallied to make it 8-6 with 11 minutes left in the game.

Still, FDU-Florham held on thanks to insurance goals from Stewart, Orazietti, Melnik and a man-down point from Belanger to end the game with a win.

With 8:26 left in the contest, the Devils bench ignited with a beautiful goal from Stewart who fired in a backhanded shot off a crisp pass from Orazietti behind the net.

Sophomore Tom Tornetto earned the win with 14 saves senior Dan Decker recorded six ground balls on defense. Sophomore Jeremy Kaplan played a key role for the Devils, forcing causing three turnovers and notching five ground balls while junior Dan Sagl picked up five ground balls and caused two turnovers.
