MADISON, N.J. (March 18, 2017) -- The Fairleigh Dickinson University men's lacrosse team rallied with six goals in the fourth quarter but fell just short, dropping an 11-8 decision to Oneonta Saturday morning at Robert T. Shields Field.
The Devils dropped to 4-2 on the season as the Red Dragons improved to 3-2.
Freshmen
John Belanger and
Alec Orazietti notched three goals each while classmate
John Guido and junior
David Stewart added a goal a piece.Â
The Red Dragons jumped out a 2-0 start but the Devils cut that short with a goal from Steward 7:28 in the first off a feed from Orazietti.Â
FDU-Florham struggled to halt the aggressive attack of their opponents however as Oneonta score six unanswered goals to leave the third quarter with a 8-2 lead.
Still, the Devils proved to be resilient in the fourth quarter, scoring six goals including four unanswered marks in the last seven minutes of the contest.
While Oneonta's TJ Kilmetis opened up the scoring in the fourth quarter with a goal just about three minutes in, Orazietti answered back 15 seconds later firing in a shot to the top right corner of the net on an unassisted play.Â
Less then a minute later, Orazietti passed the ball to Guido who sniped in the Devils' fourth goal of the game.
The Red Dragons scored twice more before the Devils went on a 4-0 run to finish the match up, including three goals within 1:02.Â
Belanger scored with 4:46 remaining off a Stewart assist and then grabbed another point just 35 seconds later on a man-up opportunity on a feed from
Michael Warg.
Orazietti capped off the offensive threat with his third goal on a man-up opportunity with just over three minutes remaining.Â
Still, the late rally wasn't enough for the Devils to catch the Red Dragons who were led by a five-goal performance from Kilmetis.
Sophomore
Michael Adragna worked on defense, causing four turnovers and grabbing three ground balls while senior
Dan Decker picked up six ground balls and caused two turnovers.
In net, sophomore
Tom Tornetto made 10 saves for the Devils while Andrew Helfman made 11 stops for Oneonta.
