Devils Edge Out Mariners, 10-9

MADISON, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson University men's lacrosse team had a strong first-half surge that propelled them to a 10-9 victory over the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday afternoon at Robert T. Shields Field.

With the win, FDU-Florham continues a three-game win streak that improve their overall record to 4-1 while the Mariners dropped to 1-1.

The Devils were led by the freshman duo of John Belanger and Alec Orazietti who combined for seven goals each. Senior Dalton Rimmer added a goal and two assists while freshman John Guido and sophomore Michael Warg notched a goal each.

FDU-Florham went on a 5-0 run to leave the first half with a comfortable lead.

However, the Mariners fought back with a second half jolt and used a 4-0 run to make the score 6-5 with 4:27 left in the third quarter.

With 10 seconds remaining in the third quarter, Belanger ran through the opposing defense and fired one into the net.

Orazietti opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with his third goal of the game off a beautiful feed from Rimmer to grab an 8-5 lead.

Still Merchant Marine Academy made a final push with three straight goals in the last four minutes of play but a pair of Belanger goals earlier in the quarter gave FDU-Florham the points it needed to remain on top.

Belanger finished the night with four goals and two assists.

Rimmer impressed on the defensive end with seven ground balls and two caused turnovers while senior Dan Decker picked up six ground balls and senior Matt Melnik and David Stewart notched five each.

In net, sophomore Tom Tornetto made 17 saves to earn the victory.

Up next, the Devils host Oneonta on Wednesday, March 15 at 4 p.m. at Robert T. Shields Field.
