MADISON, N.J. (December 9, 2017) - The FDU men's basketball team was edged by in-state rival Centenary 79-73 on Saturday afternoon.
The Devils trailed early, but a 7-0 spurt pulled the team in front 11-7. The early run was sparked by four straight points from junior
Darren Davy, who finished with eight first half tallies. After the Cyclones closed to within one, FDU went on a 12-3 run as sophomore Rajaan Dixon nailed a pair of treys from behind the arc.
Sophomore
Joe Duffy knocked down a layup and then fed Davy for a bucket as FDU grabbed its largest lead of the afternoon at 13. Freshman
Shawn Smith hit a jumper in the lane with the clock winding down to put the hosts up 11 heading into the break.
Duffy added seven points in seven minutes off the bench in the first half, as the Devils shot a blistering 15-of-26 (57.75) while limiting Centenary to 12-of-31 (38.1%) in the opening half.
The second half was back-and-forth for the first eight minutes, as the teams traded baskets. The Cyclones were able to whittle the lead down and layup with 5:32 gave the visitors a lead. Centenary converted their free throws down the stretch to hold off FDU, as a layup by freshman
Ahmad St. Fleur cut the lead to four, which was as close as the Devils would get.
Davy finished with 16 points and nine points, while Dixon and Smith each had 14. Duffy chipped in 10 off the bench, setting a new season-high.
FDU will travel to Yeshiva for a matchup with the Maccabees on December 27 at 7 p.m.
