BRONX, N.Y. (December 28, 2017) - A 21 point second quarter propelled the FDU women's basketball team to a 69-51 victory over Mount St. Vincent Thursday.
The Devils improve to 6-4, and will take on host Lehman College in the championship game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament.
The first quarter was played tightly, with neither side able to grab more than a three point lead. The Dolphins hit a three pointer with 31 seconds left in the period to take a 13-12 lead heading into the second stanza.
Sophomore
Kendrea Williams tallied five straight points to help the Devils build a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the afternoon. The tough FDU defending held the Dolphins without a field goal during a four minute stretch, and closed the half with an 8-0 run. That 8-0 rally helped push the lead to double-digits.
The Devils locked in during the third quarter, holding Mount St. Vincent without a field goal over the final 6:47 of the frame. Junior
Bria Smith converted a Jennah Roman pass for a layup with 13 ticks left to give the Devils a 50-34 lead heading into the fourth.
The drought continued into the fourth quarter, with the first field goal coming with 6:25 left in the contest as FDU had scored the first seven points of the stanza. Senior
Michaela Piserchia capped off the scoring with a layup with 35 seconds to give FDU its second straight win.
Williams led the way with 24 points, while sophomore
Gabrielle Harris added 22 points and five rebounds. Smith was a force on the glass, pulling in 11 boards with four steals and eight points. Roman led the charge off the bench with 10 points.
