SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The FDU-Florham men's basketball team fell to Hunter College, 79-72, in the consolation bracket of the Union College Tournament on Sunday, Nov. 26
.
The Devils are now 0-5 on the season while the Hawks earned their first win and move to 1-3.
With 1:15 left in the contest and the Devils trailing by eight, sophomore
Rajaan Dixon hit a pivotal three-pointer off an assist from senior
Darren Davy, who grabbed the initial offensive rebound, to help put the Devils within five.
Still, Hunter didn't panic and scored three straight to increase their lead. With 18 seconds left on the clock, junior
Anthony Mitchell hit a layup and then followed with one from behind-the-arc, but it wasn't enough to catch the Hawks before time expired.
Both teams shot 50 percent from the field in the second half, but the Hawks took advantage of FDU-Florham fouls, making 17 of 20 free throws in the second stanza to hold off their opponent.
Despite the loss, the Devils showed significant improvement in second chance points, earning 17 to the Hawk's six, as FDU grabbed a 14-6 advantage on offensive rebounds.
FDU showed their depth, gaining 28 points off the bench, including 20 alone in the second half. Mitchell finished the evening with 14 points while Dixon added 13.
Davy was just short of a double-double, putting up 12 points and nine rebounds while freshman
Ahmad St. Fleur contributed 11.
