Men's Hoops Nipped in Final Minute by Westfield State

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (November 25, 2017) - The FDU men's basketball team was tripped up by Westfield State 68-65 in the Sig Makofski Tournament hosted by Union College Saturday.

The Devils drop to 0-4, and will face either Hunter or Union in the consolation game tomorrow afternoon.

FDU jumped out to the lead early, using a 16-4 run over the first seven minutes. Westfield State went on a 10-0 spurt of their own late in the first, grabbing a 22-21 lead with 6:15 to play in the opening half.

Senior Steve Herdman tallied five straight points as the Devils closed the first half with 11consecutive points. Freshman Jimmy Olaniyi also chipped in four during the run, helping FDU lead by eight heading into the break. The Devils shot well in the first half, going 13-of-27 (48.1%) while Westfield shot just 34%.

Westfield would trim the lead down to three just 1:40 into the second stanza, but an 11-0 Devils run capped off by an Ahmad St. Fleur layup extended the lead to 14. St. Fleur hit a free throw with 9:42 to push the lead back to double-digits but the Owls would soon take over.

Six straight Owl points got them within four, but sophomore Rajaan Dixon canned a trey to stop the run. Moody Bey of Westfield proved to be too much in the second half as he totaled 16 points, including seven straight to pull the game even.

After an Owl layup, junior Darren Davy tied the game with under a minute left thanks to a pair from the free throw line. After giving up a layup with 13 seconds left, the Devils had two possessions to tie the game, but were unable to convert.

Davy led the Devils with 21 points and seven boards, while Dixon knocked down a trio of three's. Junior Edwin Lopez and Olaniyi each chipped in six off the bench for FDU.
