TEANECK, N.J. (November 15, 2017) - Despite 15 points from senior
Steve Herdman, the FDU men's basketball team fell to Division I FDU-Metro Campus 111-49 in the season opener Wednesday evening.
With the victory, the Knights picked up their first win of the season after losses to Seton Hall and Penn State.
Herdman scored the first points of the year for the Devils off a jumper, and junior
Darren Davy knocked down his first career three pointer to give the Devils an early 5-3 lead. The Knights would tally the 26 of the next 29 points before, senior
Veon Lassiter hit a jump shot with 12:06 left in the opening frame.
The Knights limited their Division III counterparts to five points over the final 4:39 of the first half. The Devils shot just 28.1% from the field in the opening half, compared to 61.5% for the Knights.
Herdman shot a perfect 4-for-4 from the field in the second half, while freshmen
Oliver Ortman and
Jimmy Olaniyi along with junior
Edwin Lopez each scored first collegiate points in the second half. Classmate
Ahmad St. Fleur had two points, two assists and two steals while starting in his collegiate debut.
Davy led the squad with seven points and seven rebounds, while freshman
Shawn Smith chipped in five points off the bench.
FDU-Metro was led 17 points each from Darnell Edge and Mike Holloway Jr.
The Devils open the home portion of their season with a 7 p.m. tilt Friday night against the College of St. Elizabeth.
