Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Edged by No. 13 Rutgers-Newark

MADISON, N.J. (October 4, 2017) - The FDU men's soccer team kept No. 13 Rutgers-Newark off the board for 59 minutes, but the Scarlet Raiders came out on top 1-0 Wednesday evening.

The Devils played one of their best 90 minutes efforts of the season, but fell to 0-10 on the year. Rutgers-Newark. who was ranked as high as No. 4 last week in the United Soccer Coaches poll, moved to 13-1 this season.

The young backline of freshmen Shaun Bishop, Nick Halpin and Kenneth Campen along with sophomore Nat Amadeo had strong games, showing toughness by stepping in front of several shots. The Scarlet Raiders Fabio De Sousa, who came into the contest ranked ninth nationally with 12 goals, was limited to just five shots on goal during the game.

Amadeo had the Devils best chance in the 13th minute, as a header was just cleared off the end line by a defender. Senior JT Bretschneider faced 11 shots in the opening 45 minutes, making six saves. His best save in the half was a De Sousa attempt off of a corner kick that he stopped. With time winding down in the period, FDU's John Timmes had a shot stopped and it ended the half at 0-0.

Freshman Ricky La Stella was a dangerous option for the Devils up top and created havoc for the Rutgers-Newark defense. In the 56th minute, La Stella drew a yellow card on a defender going down the sideline, almost breaking away from the last man back.  In the 57th minute, the freshman rocketed a shot that was punched away at the last second by RU-N keeper Andres Medina to keep the score level.

In the 61st minute, the Devils were whistled for a questionable call in the box, and De Sousa converted a penalty kick to put the visitors up 1-0. FDU continued to search for an equalizer, and had back-to-back corner kicks in the 83rd minute. The Devils fought hard to the end, but were unable to tie it, falling 1-0.

Timmes and freshman Michael Rosario each had four shots, while Bretschneider made nine saves.

The Devils will travel to Wilkes on Saturday for a 7 p.m. MAC Freedom contest.
