Field Hockey Knocks Off Keystone, 1-0

LA PLUME, Pa. (October 4, 2017) - Junior Brooke Sherwin scored in the 59th minute to lead the FDU field hockey team to a 1-0 triumph over Keystone Wednesday.

The Devils are now 9-3 on the season while Keystone is now 4-6.

Keystone took the first shot, but an attempt off a penalty corner went wide just 1:22 into the game. After FDU had two shots in the first three minutes, neither side was able to put an attempt toward the goal for another seven minutes. In the 28th minute, consecutive shots by junior Stephanie Noll and senior Marissa Kowalskie were stopped by the Giants goalkeeper.

Devils junior goalie Samantha Rubin had a big save in the 31st minute to preserve the 0-0 score, and the Devils had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 37st minute. Junior Chrissy Penney fired a shot that was cleared off the line for a defensive save 1:43 into the second half. The Devils continued to pepper shots at Keystone goalie Megan Novak, but were thwarted time after time.

Keystone had their best chance in the 56th minute, but sophomore Marie Pietracatella was there to make a defensive save to keep the host Giants off the board. FDU finally broke through in the 59th minute, as Sherwin emerged from a scramble to fire a shot past Novak. The Devils tough defense held tough, not allowing a Giants shots over the final 11 minutes after the goal.

Rubin made two saves, while Sherwin and Kowalskie each took six shots in the victory.

The Devils are back in action on Saturday, hosting Eastern University in a MAC Freedom contest beginning at 1 p.m.
