WILKES BARRE, Pa. (October 28, 2017) - The FDU football team dropped a heartbreaker 18-15 against King's on Saturday afternoon.
The Devils drop to 2-6, 1-6 in the Middle Atlantic Conference. King's improved to 4-4, 3-4 in conference.
After a
Darren Jenkins interception, the Devils started with the ball on their own 45 with 6:10 left in the first quarter. Sophomore
Jagger Green completed passes to
Malik Pressley and
Mike Panzarino, but the the drive soon fizzled. Sophomore
Nick Maciejewski converted his second field goal of the year, a 27 yarder, to put FDU up 3-0.
The hosts would march down in an 8-play, 75 yard drive, and on 4th-3, converted a long touchdown to go ahead 7-3. Neither side could breakthrough, and that was the score heading into halftime.
After
Christian Krumenacker forced a turnover on downs with a big defensive stop, the Devils cut the lead to a point on the next drive. Facing a 3rd and 35,
Tommy Galante hit Pressley for 24 yards to set up a managable field goal. Maciejewski kicked his second field goal of the game, this time a 29 yard one to trim to within one.
The Devils took lead after forcing a punt. Freshman
Alnazir Blackman took a handoff and went 40 yards for the score, giving the Devils a 12-7 lead after missing the two point conversion. The Monarchs would kick a field goal on the next possession, cutting the deficit to 12-10.
Maciejewski kicked his third field goal of the afternoon on the next series, as he was aided by 58 yards on the ground from sophomore
Steve Iannone. The Devils would go three-and-out on their next two possessions, and with 2:12 left punted to give King's the ball at the FDU 48.
After an intentional grounding penalty brought up 3rd and 14, FDU was called for defensive pass interference which resulted in an automatic first down. With 20 seconds left, Zach Whitehead scored the touchdown and completed the two-point try putting King's up 18-15.
FDU had one more possession to set up for the tying field goal, but a fumble on the second play from scrimmage ended the comeback try.
Iannone had a career-best 154 yards on 20 carries, while Blackman had 86 yards. Defensively, junior
Isaiah Turner had 15 tackles, one sack and an interception, while freshman
Kyle Connelly had five stops and two sacks.
