Volleyball Splits At Hunter Tri-Match

NEW YORK, N.Y. (October 21, 2017) - The FDU volleyball team fell to Hunter before topping Montclair St. in straight sets to earn a split on Saturday.

The Devils are now 22-7 on the season with the split.

HUNTER 3, FDU 0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-23)
The Devils were limited to a .023 hitting percentage over the three sets, including hitting in the negative during the first two stanzas. Hunter held the edge in every stat category, including a commanding 46-24 edge in kills.

Junior Lauren Harris had a team high six kills and 18 digs, while senior Rachel Catena had 15 digs and an ace.

FDU 3, MONTCLAIR 0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-21)
The Devils played much better against the Red Hawks, topping their in-state rivals for the second time in eight days. After an attack error made the score 18-17 FDU, the Devils rolled off the next seven points, with Catena chipping in two aces during the run.

FDU did the same in the second set, as Montclair closed to within two points this time at 20-18. Once again, it was Catena who anchored the rally, as junior Marissa Lehnert and senior Melissa Gaffney had kills during the 5-0 run.

Despite jumping out to an early 7-2 edge, the Red Hawks clawed back, getting to within 16-15. Harris slammed home three straight kills to push the lead back to four, but Montclair refused to go away. Senior Amelia Vetto scored an ace, and Gaffney had two kills to put the match away,

Harris had a double-double of 14 kills and 17 digs, as Gaffney also chipped in 10 kills and 10 digs.

FDU closes out conference action on Wednesday, taking on Manhattanville at 7 p.m. With a win, the Devils clinch a spot in the MAC Freedom Tournament.
