Field Hockey Topples King's in Double Overtime, 1-0

MADISON, N.J. (October 20, 2017) - Junior Kelly O'Neill scored with just under a minute remaining in the second overtime to lead the FDU field hockey team to a 1-0 win over King's Friday night.

The Devils move to 12-5 overall, and 5-1 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom with the victory. King's dropped to 8-9 overall, 3-3 in conference play. With the win, the Devils become the first MAC Freedom team to clinch a berth in the conference tournament in two weeks.

The first half was a strong defensive battle, with neither side giving an inch. Junior Brooke Sherwin fired a shot high 2:27 into the game, but that was only shot over the first 24:19 of the game.

The teams combined for six penalty corners in the opening stanza, but neither side was able to break through. 1:20 into the second half, freshman Marissa Colvin got a stick on a shot but her deflection just went over the goal, keeping the score knotted at zero.

The Monarchs had five consecutive penalty corners over a three minute span late in the second period, but the Devils corner defense held strong. Three shots by visitors were blocked by the active sticks of the defense.

In the 76th minute, Monarch goalie Kayla Nailor made a key stop on junior Alyssa Mele, who also had an attempt in the 81st minute go wide. The Devils finally broke through with 59 seconds to go in the second overtime. With time winding down, senior Gabby Allen crossed a pass that O'Neill slid under the goalie for her second tally of the year, sending the Devils to a win.

Sherwin, O'Neill, Mele and senior Marissa Kowalskie all had three shots in the victory. The defensive unit of senior Lauren Brannan, sophomores Marie Pietracatella and Maggie Sohns and junior Makayla Pak held the Monarchs to just five shots, and none on goal.

The Devils close out the non-conference portion of their schedule with a Tuesday night clash against No. 7 Montclair State at Robert T. Shields Field. Prior to the contest, the Devils will honor the four seniors of the 2017 Senior Class.
