Volleyball Rolls Past Misericordia on Senior Night

MADISON, N.J. (October 17, 2017) - The FDU women's volleyball team rolled past Misericordia 25-10, 25-8, 25-27, 25-9 on Senior Night.

The Devils improved in 20-6, 4-2 in the MAC Freedom, while Misericordia dropped to 13-16, 1-5 in conference.

FDU never trailed in the first set, and used seven straight tallies from senior Melissa Gaffney to pull ahead 13-3. The Cougars would get no closer than nine the rest of the set, as a vicious double-block by junior Marissa Lehnert and sophomore Nathalia Padron brought up set. The frame ended on an unforced Cougar error.

Much like the first period, the Devils never trailed, as seniors Rachel Catena and Amelia Vetto each aces during the opening 12-2 run. Junior Lauren Harris recorded two aces during the final 6-0 rally to give the Devils a 2-0 match lead.

The Devils dropped the third, but battled back from five points down to force extra points. Harris ignited a rally with a kill, and a kill from junior Quinlan evened the session at 14. FDU was unable to continue the momentum and dropped the frame 27-25.

After a back and forth opening to the fourth stanza, freshman Rebecca Morse served an ace and a Harris kill stretched the lead to 12-6. Vetto stepped up to the service line after a side-out and served 10 straight points, including an ace during the run. Harris pounded home a kill to end the match off a feed from senior Courtney Conte.

Catena and Vetto combined for nine aces, while Harris and Gaffney notched double-doubles. Harris had 18 kills and 12 digs, while Gaffney had 10 kills and 14 digs. The team as a unit hit ,264 including a blistering .550 in the fourth set.

FDU is back in action Thursday, taking on Mount St. Mary in non-conference action at 7 p.m.
