ST. DAVID'S, Pa. (October 11, 2017) - The FDU volleyball team saw its 13 match winning streak snapped by Eastern 25-20, 25-17 and 25-16.
The Devils fall to 17-4, 3-2 in the MAC Freedom, while Eastern is 15-9, 4-1 in conference.
Despite holding a match-edge in aces (3-1) and blocks (6-4) the Devils were out-killed 54-28 and had 13 less digs than the Eagles.
The hosts trailed early in the first set before embarking on a set-changing 11-2 run to go up 14-8. After a Caroline Shelby kill brought up set point, the Devils scored the next three, with senior
Melissa Gaffney grabbing a pair of kills. Shelby ended the first period with kill, putting FDU down 1-0.
The Devils surrendered 11 of the opening 14 points in the second stanza, and eventually fell behind 17-8. FDU took advantage of a trio of unforced errors to battle back and to within 17-12. That was as close as they would come, as back-to-back kills put the Devils in a 2-0 hole.
FDU opened the final set on a 6-2 spurt, but quickly surrendered nine of the next 10 markers. A ball-handling error brought the Devils to within 12-11, but Eastern pulled away with nine of the next 10 points once again. The Eagles closed out with three of the final four tallies to end the match.
Junior
Lauren Harris led the way with 10 digs and nine kills, as senior
Rachel Catena chipped in 13 digs. Junior
Marissa Lehnert led the way with four blocks.
FDU is back in action on Friday, competing at the two-day Stevens Invitational.
