Mitchell Earns 150th Career Win As Devils Roll in MAC Opener

WILKES BARRE, Pa. (January 4, 2017) - Head Coach Marc Mitchell recorded his 150th career coaching victory as the FDU women's basketball team rolled to a 87-58 win over Wilkes in the MAC Freedom opener Wednesday.

Mitchell, who began coaching the Devils in 2009, now holds a 150-58 career mark. "The team played hard and together tonight," Mitchell said. "They all had the right mindset." The Devils picked up their eighth straight victory and moved to 10-2 on the season, while Wilkes dropped to 4-7.

Freshman Kendrea Williams, who was named to the All-Tournament team last week at the Jamie Lynn Roberts DC Holiday Classic, scored a game-high 19 points. Sophomore Raven Dowling dropped in a season-high 11 points, while freshman Taiah Thornton filled the stat-sheet with 17 points, four steals, and five assists.

Wilkes scored the first seven points of the game, holding FDU off the board for the first 2:13. The Devils returned the favor, countering with a 20-2 spurt of their own, limiting Wilkes to one basket over the final 7:18 of the opening frame. The Lady Colonels trimmed the gap down to six opening the second stanza, but Dowling and senior Alyssa McDonough connected from behind the arc to bring back the double digit lead and FDU cruised into the break with an 18 point cushion.

Mcdonough and Dowling combined for 21 points in the opening half, and senior Rachel Groom, who was named Jamie Lynn Roberts DC Holiday Classic Tournament MVP last week, had five points and hauled in four boards over the first 20.

FDU poured it on in the second half, tallying the first 13 markers of the third. Wilkes was able to outscore FDU by a 22-7 margin in the fourth, but a 35-9 Devils edge in the third had already cemented a strong win for the team. Junior Michaela Piserchia collected her first career points, while also grabbing five rebounds in the second half.

The Devils will return home on Saturday, hosting Misericordia at 1 p.m.
