ST. DAVIDS, Pa. (January 18, 2017) - A three pointer at the buzzer sent Eastern to a 64-62 win over the FDU men's basketball team Wednesday evening.
The Devils drop to 6-10, 3-2 in the MAC Freedom while Eastern moved to 9-7, 4-1 in the conference. Senior
Donte Ali led FDU with 15 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore
Anthony Mitchell and senior
James Moran combined for 27 points and five three pointers.
FDU fell into a hole early on, surrendering the opening 10 points of the contest, forcing the team into a 30 second timeout. The Devils trimmed the lead in half with just under nine minutes left in the opening stanza, as freshman
Rajaan Dixon swatted a shot and ran the floor with layup to make the game 19-14. With the team trailing 26-17, Ali converted a pair of layups before Moran canned a trey to get FDU within two, but two free throws at the buzzer sent Eastern into the break with a four point edge.
Mitchell hit consecutive layups to once again get FDU within one, but the Devils couldn't even things up until there was 13:25 left in the half. Junior
Alex Hanssen took a feed from freshman Timar Brown to finally give FDU a one point lead, their first lead of the game with 9:28 left. Moran drilled back-to-back from beyond the that stretched the Devils lead to three, and a Mitchell trey gave FDU their biggest edge of the evening at 58-53.
Hanssen put the Devils up four before Shaquan Turk hit a layup and converted the free throw to bring the gap to a point. Junior
Derek Leohner nailed a twisting layup to give FDU another three point lead, but that was all the scoring FDU would get. After getting two from the charity stripe, Eastern forced a turnover but missed the ensuing layup, but the possession arrow on a jump ball gave the Eagles a chance for the win. Victor Pena was able to knock a corner three pointer at the buzzer to give Eastern the two-point win.
FDU is back home on Saturday, hosting Delaware Valley.
