Field hockey falls to Stevens in Shootout Thriller

HOBOKEN, NJ – Despite grabbing the early lead, the Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham field hockey team was defeated by Stevens Institute of Technology in a shootout thriller, 3-2, on Wednesday, Sept. 7 in a non-conference matchup.

The tough loss dropped the Devils' record to 2-1 while Stevens moved to 2-2.

Senior forward Kim Davis opened up the scoring just 14:11 into the game, scoring off of freshman Jess Pietracatella's rebound to give the Devils the 1-0 lead.

The Devils outshot the Ducks, 15-7, in the first half but couldn't break through the solid goal tending of Stevens' Emily Stukenborg who made three saves in the final minute of the half.

Davis continued to spark an aggressive offensive effort in the second half and was rewarded with a goal just over 15 minutes into the second half to put the Devils ahead, 2-0.

But the Devils couldn't hold and with about 16 minutes left in regulation time, Stevens began its comeback with three consecutive penalty corners and an eventual goal from Regan Littell to close the gap, 2-1.

Just two minutes later, Stevens struck again as Cassidy O'Hearn netted the game-tying goal to eventual force overtime.

Following two 15-minute scoreless overtime periods, the Devils and Ducks squared off in a shootout that ended in favor of Stevens to close the game at 3-2.

Senior defender Erin O'Connell had a huge game for the Devils, making three defensive saves to back up sophomore goalie Samantha Rubin's 17 saves.

The Devils return to Madison, N.J. for their home opener against Gwynedd Mercy University on Saturday 10 at 1 p.m.
