Men's Soccer Plays CMSV to a Draw at Drew Fall Festival

MADISON, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham men's soccer team played College of Mount St. Vincent to a 2-2 draw on Saturday at the first of two games this weekend at the Drew University Fall Festival.

The Devils (0-1-1) trailed 1-0 at the break but came back to take the lead in the second half before a goal by the Dolphins (0-0-1) in the 87th minute eventually capped the scoring.

Junior forward Brian Chiarello and senior midfielder AJ Carnevale each recorded goals in the draw for FDU-Florham, who takes on Hood College in Sunday's festival finale.

Carnevale, who led the MAC Freedom in goals a season ago, put the Devils in front by burying a penalty kick in the 85th minute, however, at the 86:48 mark the Dolphins pulled even when Andrew Gomez nailed a direct kick on a set piece. The teams proceeded to play two scoreless extra time periods before finalizing the draw.

Led by freshman Justin Estremera's game-high six shot attempts, the Devils outshot the Dolphins 27-18 in the contest.

The Dolphins struck first when Tim Guido netted a penalty kick goal at the 41:44 mark. Despite 11 first-half shots, the Devils were unable to break through in the opening stanza and trailed 1-0 at intermission.

Following another 25-plus minutes of scoreless soccer, Chiarello finally broke through for the Devils with the team's first goal of the season. The junior forward corralled a ball that was tipped out by the CMSV goalkeeper and delivered a strike from 20-yards out for the equalizer.

In the 85th minute, the Devils were awarded a penalty shot of their own following a foul and yellow card charged to the Dolphins. Carnevale promptly finished his opportunity for a 2-1 Devils' lead.

But just over two minutes later Gomez came through with a well-placed direct kick that hooked into the upper right corner of the net past the reach of FDU-Florham netminder Frank Maggiore Jr. Maggiore Jr. came on at the 67:53 mark for starting keeper JT Bretschneider.

Bretschneider made three stops in his 67:53 of action, while Maggiore Jr. tallied five saves in the draw.

CMSV goalkeeper Padelis Astrindis played the full 110 minutes and made nine saves on the day.

FDU-Florham returns to action tomorrow against Hood with start time set for 3 p.m. at Drew.
