Resilient Devils edged out by No. 11 Lions

MADISON, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham field hockey team clawed its way back from two separate deficits but ultimately fell to the No. 11 The College of New Jersey on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at Robert T. Shields Field.

Senior forward Kim Davis scored twice and picked up an assist in the Devils' effort.

The Devils dropped to 5-4 on the season while the Lions improved to 5-3.

TCNJ's Lexi Smith scored twice in the first to put the Devils back, 2-0 at the half.

But FDU-Florham's resiliency was apparent throughout the night as they answered back with three goals in the second half.

The Devils' first goal came off the stick of sophomore forward Chrissy Penney who snuck the ball past the TCNJ goalie off an assist from Davis, after a penalty corner to open up the second half scoring at 37:46.

Just about five minutes later, Davis took advantage of a penalty stroke opportunity and netted a rocket to the top left corner of TCNJ's cage to even up the contest.

FDU-Florham's senior defender Erin O'Connell and senior midfielder Noelle Shirey played key roles in halting the Lions' attack.

At 53:26 though, Lions forward Jaclyn Douglas notched a goal off a pass from Elizabeth Morrison from the goal line to re-take the lead.

That didn't stop the persistent Devils as Davis once again stormed through the Lion's defense and tipped in the ball off assists from sophomore midfielder Makayla Pak and O'Connell.

But about two minutes, Smith struck again with her third goal of the night to give the Lions a close 4-3 win.

Devils' sophomore goalie Samantha Rubin made two saves in the night as the defense worked to block several shots.

FDU-Florham returns to conference action on Friday, Sept. 30 at 7:30 p.m. to take on Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
