Field hockey tops Cougars, 3-1

MADISON, NJ -- The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham Devils field hockey team rolled past Misericordia University, 3-1, in a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom match up on Saturday, Sept. 24 at Robert T. Shields Field.

The Devils improve to 5-3 (1-0 MAC Freedom) as the Cougars fall to 1-8 (0-1 MAC Freedom) on the season.

Senior forward Kim Davis led the Devils with two goals and sophomore forward Brooke Sherwin notched one in the Devils' win.

Davis opened up the scoring at 14:48 in the first, scoring from the left side off a pass from senior defender Erin O'Connell.

The Devils dominated the first half, outshooting the Cougars, 15-2, but were halted from scoring by a solid Misericordia defense.

FDU-Florham's attack was persistent and finally broke through again at 30:42 when Sherwin drilled in a goal during a scrum in front of the net to put the Devils up, 2-0.

Freshman midfielder Maggie Sohns had a standout game for the Devils, being a constant source a pressure and yielding several scoring opportunities for FDU-Florham with seven shots.

In the second half, the Devils continued their impressive command and Davis' hard work paid off as she grabbed an insurance goal at 57:32 off her own rebound.

The Cougars, however, made the final tally of the game with no time remaining as Suzhaunna Lerch netted a goal following a late penalty corner to prevent the Devils' shutout.

Cougars' goalie Jenn Gazdick made 11 saves in the loss and FDU-Florham's sophomore goalie Samantha Rubin grabbed two in the triumph.

The Devils return to non-conference play against The College of New Jersey on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. at Robert T. Shields Field.
