MAHWAH, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham volleyball team recorded two wins on the second day of the Roadrunner Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 17 at Ramapo College.
The Devils defeated Hunter College, 3-2, in a close match and finished off with a 3-0 sweep of Mount Saint Mary College (NY). The wins pushed the Devils to split the tournament 2-2 and exit with a 6-5 record.
FDU-Florham 3, Â Hunter College 2 (25-14, 14-25, 25-19, 23-25, 15-11)
The Devils and Eagles traded close sets, until FDU-Florham was able to grab a lead in the fifth set to pick up the 3-2 win.
The two teams were even with 60 points each in the match but FDU was able to grab a lead in 10 aces to the Eagle's six and 104 digs to Hunter College's 98. However, the Eagles led in kills, with 51 to FDU-Florham's 45.
Junior
Melissa Gaffney led the Devils with 15 kills followed by sophomores
Kate Quinlan and
Marissa Lehnert who had eight each. Quinlan also made four blocks in the triumph.
Freshman
Brianna Perone finished the match with 23 assists and Junior
Courtney Conte had 11. Defensively, Junior
Rachel Catena led with 27 digs, sophomore
Lauren Harris had 25 and Gaffney made 20.
FDU-Florham 3, Mount Saint Mary College 0 (25-22, 27-25, 25-22)
In the Devils' third meeting with Mount Saint Mary College, FDU-Florham completed a 3-0 sweep that pushed the season's series between the two teams to 2-1 in favor of the Devils.
The Devils dominated defensively, wracking up 89 digs to the Knights' 65.Â
Catena led the Devils in digs once again with 25 followed by Conte who had 19 and Harris with 12.Â
Leading in kills were Harris, Gaffney and Quinlan who combined for a total of 31 kills.
Conte highlighted 29 assists in the contest as Lehnert made five blocks.
The Devils return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. against King's College in a MAC Freedom conference matchup.
