GLASSBORO, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham field hockey team dropped a hard-fought 3-1 decision to the No. 15 ranked Rowan University Profs on Thursday, Sept. 15 at Coach Wackar Stadium.
The Devils fell to 3-3 as the Profs improved to 4-2 on the season.
Rowan was the first score at 21:42 when freshman forward Bridget Boyle finished on a breakaway.
It didn't take long for the Devils to respond though, as just under five minutes later sophomore midfielder
Chrissy Penney drilled in a goal of her own off a pass from freshman forward
Jessica Pietracatella.
Despite a relentless Rowan attack that outshot the Devils, 8-2, in the first half, FDU-Florham's solid defense was able to hold off the Profs to leave the half tied at one.
The Profs broke through in the second half though, as Courtney Aquino scored the go-ahead goal, lifting the ball over FDU-Florham goalie
Samantha Rubin's head, off a pass from Boyle, right in front of the Devils' cage.
Despite a few good penalty corner opportunities, the Devils struggled to get shots off as the Profs' air-tight defense thwarted every offensive threat and stopped several FDU-Florham passing sequences.
At 56:34 Rowan's Boyle notched an insurance goal, nailing a loose ball into the Devils' net during a scram after a penalty corner.
With just over three minutes remaining in the game, the Devils had one of their best scoring chances of the night when senior defender
Erin O'Connell drove the ball out of FDU-Florham's zone. Freshman midfielder
Maggie Sohns was on the receiving end of the ball just past the midfield line and dribbled past the Profs' players before dishing the ball off to senior forward
Kim Davis. Davis took the ball into Prof's territory on a breakaway, but a solid Rowan defense prevented her from getting a shot off to hold the score at 3-1.
Rubin made three saves in goal for the Devils in the defeat.
The Devils return to action on Saturday, Sept. 17 when they take on Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa. at 1 p.m.
