POMONA, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against Richard Stockton University after double-overtimes in the first day of the Stockton Seashore Classic on Saturday, Sept. 10.
The Devils (0-2-2) clawed back late and battled well to hold on to the tie in the extra periods.
The Ospreys (1-2-1) were the more dangerous team in what was an uneventful first half. The first major chance of the game came in about the 24th minute when a Stockton forward broke through the Devils' defense and attempted to chip the ball past the goalkeeper, only to have the shot cleared off the goal line by FDU-Florham senior defender Robby Bonjione.
Stockton took the lead with 13 minutes to play in the half after a poor clearance by the Devils' defense led to an Ospreys' penalty kick. Stockton freshman forward Justin Ruiz picked up the clear just outside the box, ran at the FDU-Florham defense and was tripped up. Stockton senior forward Anthony Colofranson finished the job at the spot, putting the ball passed the Devils' keeper to make it , 1-0.
The second half started similar to the first but it was FDU-Florham creating the bulk of the chances. The Devils' offensive push sparked with about 20 minutes left. They earned a free kick and played it short to FDU-Florham freshman John Fredy Gutierrez who turned and shot, hitting the crossbar from 30-yards out.
The game opened up soon after as both squads pushed up and down the field in search of a goal. With under nine minutes to play FDU-Florham freshman forward Justin Estremera provided the Devils their best chance of the game to that point. Estremera received a great through ball to beat the Osprey's defense and had a one-on-one the with the goalkeeper but sent the ensuing effort over the bar.
The Devils tied it up three minutes later though, after a poor clearance by the Stockton goalkeeper. It was FDU-Florham sophomore midfielder Anthony Pares, who lifted his shot into the top left corner of net to even the game.
FDU-Florham held tight late as Stockton kept up the pressure in regulation time with two amazing chances that they were unable to capitalize on. The story was the same in the extra periods. Both teams created a number of opportunities but failed to score again.
The Devils will be back in action Sunday, Sept. 11, as they take on Ramapo College in the second day of the Stockton Seashore Classic at 1 p.m.
