Field hockey edges out William Paterson, 2-1, in Season Opener

WAYNE, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham field hockey team edged out the William Paterson Pioneers, 2-1, in the 2016 season opener at Wightman Stadium on Thursday night.

The Devils (1-0) outshot the Pioneers (0-1), 12-1, in a dominating offensive performance.

Freshman midfielder Maggie Sohns (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) scored her first collegiate goal for the Devils off a penalty corner just over 10 minutes into play.

The Devils defense stayed solid throughout the half, rarely allowing the Pioneers to break into their half.

It wasn't until the final five minutes of the first half that William Paterson's Katie Stetser broke through the solid Devils' defense, scoring off an assist from Michaela Meillier to even the score.

That was the first and last shot the Pioneers were able to take.

The Devils came out hard in the second half as sophomore Kim Davis (Long Branch, NJ/Long Branch) put constant pressure on the Pioneers defense, but Wiliam Paterson's goalie Mallory Rickerhauser came up big with six saves in the night.

With just 12:24 left in the contest, forward Brooke Sherwin (Coplay, Pa./Parkland) slammed in the game-winning goal off junior forward Gabby Allen's (Gibbsboro, N.J./Eastern) penalty corner.

In the final two minutes of the match, the Pioneers broke into the Devils' defensive zone, but goalie Samantha Rubin (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) came out with an aggressive play, kicking the ball out of danger to hold the Devils' lead.

FDU-Florham will take on Union College next in Schenectady, N.Y. on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 1 p.m.
